I am obsessed with fashion. If I had the chance to relive my college years, I would forgo a traditional education and would have studied fashion and had a career in that industry. I believe you can have different passions in your lifetime and at this moment mine include travel, cooking and fashion. I try to stay true to Food Diary of a City Girl and center it on food experiences and cooking, but occasionally if something exceptional or interesting related to fashion or lifestyle comes along, I certainly want to share that experience.
I have used complementary styling services before at Nordstrom, and I am a huge fan. I work with a stylist I love and she is always spot on and willing to help me with my fashion emergencies or when I simply want to refresh my wardrobe. Stitch Fix, however, would be different, since I would not have that one on one interaction.
For a $20 fee, Stitch Fix sends a total of five articles that can be a combination of clothing, jewelry or accessories that have been hand selected by a personal stylist based on an online personal style quiz. I took this quiz and I found the process was fun, quick and easy. Most importantly, I had finished the process and I knew my first package was en route.
The style profile quiz is built on a series of questions covering basics that include age, height and weight to more specific questions related to body proportions, size, color, print and clothing style preferences. Pictorials of different clothing styles including classic, sexy, bohemian and preppy looks are part of the style quiz where the customer selects if they like, love or hate the style. The compilation of questions is an effort to build a fashion profile for your Stitch Fix Stylist.
What I liked about the styling quiz is the ability to exclude pieces of apparel, jewelry or accessories from your shipments. I am not in the market for accessories or jewelry right now, so I opted out of receiving these items. In the event I should change my mind, I can always go back and modify my profile. A final comments section is also available for the customer to use in case the style profile quiz did not cover a specific fashion question or necessity. If you have a Pinterest board, I highly recommend you share this with your stylist. I personally do not; however, I did share my blog address so my stylist could have a snap shot of some of my features and body type. You are also able to customize all articles to your budget preferences. I personally, will not spend over $100.00 on one article of clothing, so I made sure to share this on my profile.
Here is the experience with my first Stitch Fix package. All the articles were nice and four out of five items fit perfectly. I did not care for the knit v-neck sweater or the cross front blouse. The color of the sweater was drab and the cross front blouse had a built-in tank, which is a fashion trend that I despise. The blouse was black with vertical and horizontal lines, which I am not of fan of either. So at this point, I am not at all dissatisfied. Why? The same details I am sharing with you, I shared with Stitch Fix. My expectation is my feedback will ensure that this is the last instance I will be sent two articles similar to the sweater and blouse.
So it was time to try on the sueded asymmetrical jacket. It was cute, but, looked too similar to an item already in my closet. So, I was 0-3 and next up was the sueded detail skinny jeans. They were so hot and adorably cute, but, too snug for me to wear comfortably. I immediately emailed Stitch Fix to see if they could send me a larger pair. They offered to send me a larger size, the only caveat is that I could not return the item for a refund in the event the skinny jeans did not fit. I decided to pass on the option. $88 is hard to commit to, if I don’t know 100% that they will fit me perfectly. Last, but not least, was the hot pink waist shirt dress. I loved the color and it was definitely me. The fit was perfect, however, there was just something missing and to this day I cannot put my finger on it. I only do things I love, go to places I love and buy things I love, so this was a definite – No. You might think this was not a good experience, but it was. I enjoyed the entire process. I was able to give feedback on each and every item to help my stylist with future shipments and get items that I will love and fit well. I also reevaluated my profile to make sure I changed my jean size to make sure all items I receive in the future fit me well.
I did lose out on the $20.00, but I have to say despite that I am still going to try this service again. My next shipment is due on February 28th and I am excited to see what my stylist has prepared.
Here are a couple other great things you should know about Stitch Fix. You can sign up for this service monthly, quarterly or choose to receive a package every other month. You can also stop your subscription at any time. If there is a special occasion you are shopping for, inform your stylist so that your next package can include items for that special event. If you buy an article of clothing, your $20 styling fee is applied to your order. However, if you like all five items from your package, you will receive a 25% discount, which is a great incentive. . Each shipment also includes cards with style tips based on the items that are shipped for you.
