The inspiration for this indulgent Tres Leches Coffee comes from my favorite Mexican dessert, the tres leches cake.
Similar to the dessert’s signature liquid mixture, this rich and creamy hot coffee drink incorporates three milks in the recipe. Whole Milk, Sweetened Condensed Milk and Evaporated Milk come together, along with a few other key ingredients, to create the Tres Leches Coffee.
Yes, the hot coffee elixir is sinful! However, it is both a worthy and an exquisite showstopper for your next brunch. In addition to brunch, I also enjoy preparing these beautiful coffee concoctions in lieu of dessert. Substituting decaf coffee in this recipe can quickly turn this beverage into a solid nightcap. For a boozy kick, add one to two ounces of either dark rum, whiskey or bourbon. I have experimented with both Myers’s Dark Rum and Crown Royal in this recipe and I can attest that they are both delicious accompaniments.
Let’s Make this Tres Leches Coffee!
Tres Leches Coffee Recipe
Ingredients
- 12 oz evaporated milk
- 14 oz condensed milk
- 1½ cups whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla paste vanilla extract can be used as a substitute
- ½ cup NESCAFÉ Clásico instant coffee
- 1 cup whipped cream optional
- ¼ cup chocolate shavings optional
- 1-2 oz dark rum, whiskey or bourbon optional
Instructions
- Add the first four ingredients to a four quart sauce pan and cook on medium heat for 10-15 minutes. Use a large spoon to combine the three milks. As the mixture heats, sample a spoonful of the concoction. The condensed milk will be the only element of sugar in the coffee medley. That said, the concoction is intended to be sweet. If the milk blend is too sweet for your taste buds, add an additional ¼ - ½ cup of whole milk.
- Use caution and do not burn the milks. The mixture should be piping hot before adding the instant coffee. If you are using a thermometer, 165 -180°F degrees is the approximate desired temperature.
- Add ½ cup of NESCAFÉ Clásico instant coffee to the hot medley and combine thoroughly. If you prefer a stronger coffee intensity, add more instant coffee by the tablespoon until you achieve the desired strength.
- Once the NESCAFÉ Clásico is fully integrated, you are ready to serve the hot beverage. Carefully pour 8-10 oz of the Tres Leches Coffee into four whiskey cocktail glasses or coffee mugs.
- For a boozy kick, add one to two ounces of dark rum, whiskey or bourbon to your tres leches coffee. Mix well using a cocktail spoon. Finish the cocktail by adding a generous dollop of sweetened whipped cream. Top the whipped cream with one tablespoon of chocolate shavings. Now you are ready to take a sip of this gorgeous Tres Leches Coffee! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Tools used for the Tres Leches Coffee
Optional:
1-2 oz cocktail measuring jigger
While the sweetened whipped cream and chocolate shavings are optional in this recipe, these two ingredients will add an extra oomph to the flavor and presentation. It is not necessary to wait until your next brunch to create this recipe. If you have a party of one or two at home, like I do, this recipe can be easily split in half. Halving the recipe will not change the integrity or the indulgent flavors of the coffee drink.
