Morir Soñando is a delicious Dominican orange Creamsicle cocktail that translates to “Die while Dreaming”. Although the literal translation may seem intimidating, the name figuratively alludes to the refreshment’s wonderful flavor.
Morir Soñando is a beautiful chilled citrus refreshment that the entire family can enjoy. The beverage will immediately transport adults to the tropics, while children will be reminded of one of their favorite frozen treats, the orange Creamsicle ice cream bar. As the warmer weather approaches, this orange Creamsicle cocktail is the perfect beverage that can be served alone or alongside breakfast or brunch.
I first sampled the delicious mocktail while vacationing in the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana. Although the non-alcoholic beverage is made from simple ingredients, the temperature of the orange juice and evaporated milk are essential in the drink’s proper execution. Mixing the two liquids at room temperature will result in curdled milk. That is why it is important that both the orange juice and the evaporated milk are chilled a minimum of 24 hours before making the Morir Soñando recipe. In addition to using chilled ingredients, it is also important to slowly add the orange juice into the evaporated milk while quickly whisking the two liquids together to eliminate any curdling.
Now that I have shared two very important tips, let’s make this Morir Soñando Orange Creamsicle Cocktail:
Morir Soñando: Orange Creamsicle Cocktail
Ingredients
- 1½ cups fresh squeezed chilled orange juice approximately 4-6 medium oranges
- 1½ cups chilled evaporated milk one 12 oz can of evaporated milk
- ¼ - ½ cup sugar
- 2 cups ice
- 4 orange wedges optional garnish
- 4 Maraschino cherries optional garnish
Instructions
- Juice oranges into a pitcher and measure 1½ cups. Use one orange to slice four wedges to use as a garnish for each glass.
- In a separate pitcher, add one 12 oz can of chilled evaporated milk. One can measures to precisely 1½ cups of evaporated milk.
- Add ¼ cup of sugar to the chilled evaporated milk. Mix well.
- Using a spoon or a whisk, slowly add but quickly stir in the 1½ cups of fresh squeezed orange juice into the evaporated milk.
- Once the orange juice and evaporated milk have been fully mixed, sample the sweetness of the drink. Since the natural sweetness of oranges will vary, you may need to add the remaining ¼ cup of sugar. If you desire a sweeter drink, add an additional tablespoon or more of sugar to achieve your desired sweetness. Do not add more than the remaining ¼ cup of sugar.
- Serve your orange Creamsicle mocktail on ice. Each recipe will yield four, 6 oz drinks. Garnish each glass with an orange wedge and a maraschino cherry. To transform the mocktail into a cocktail, add one to two ounces of Malibu Caribbean Rum with Coconut Liqueur. Cheers! I hope you enjoy this tropical beverage as much as I do.
Tools used for this orange Creamsicle cocktail:
Even though Morir Soñando is authentically a non-alcoholic beverage, I did some experimenting of my own to transform the non-alcoholic refreshment into a tropical cocktail. For a boozy kick, add one to two ounces of Malibu Caribbean Rum with Coconut Liqueur to every six ounces of the beverage. The Caribbean liqueur quickly transforms the beautiful Dominican orange Creamsicle cocktail into a summery beach libation. I hope that you try the mocktail or cocktail version of Morir Soñando for your next Virtual Happy Hour or brunch.
