Homemade Grapefruit Simple Syrup is a cocktail game changer. Not only is it easy to make, but it is versatile enough to be used in spritzers, dressings and more.
When I think of grapefruit, I think of South Texas. The land and weather in the Rio Grande Valley makes it optimal for growing citrus. My earliest memories of my grandfather include watching him tend to the approximately 25 – 30 Ruby Red Grapefruit trees in his backyard. As such, citrus runs through my veins.
While I may be biased, the Rio Grande Valley produces the best tasting Ruby Red Grapefruits in the US. I always look forward to fall because grapefruit season is in full effect. Occasionally, I will find Rio Grande Valley Ruby Red Grapefruits in North Carolina. When I do come across these beauties, I not only eat them fresh, but I buy a generous amount to create this Grapefruit Simple Syrup.
This lovely Grapefruit Simple Syrup has to be one of my favorite homemade elixirs. I admit that I initially created this syrup to amplify the flavors in my cocktail recipes for a Spicy Thai Chile Paloma and a Jalapeño – Grapefruit Margarita. However, this syrup also makes a delicious grapefruit spritzer, hot grapefruit tea and a refreshing grapefruit salad dressing.
Now that I have shared a couple of my favorite uses for this Grapefruit Simple Syrup, let’s get to the recipe!
Grapefruit Simple Syrup Recipe
Ingredients
- 4-5 grapefruits
- 2 cups sugar
Instructions
- Juice 4-5 grapefruits. Each grapefruit will yield approximately ½ a cup of grapefruit juice.
- Sometimes grapefruits will have tiny seeds. That said, use a fine mesh strainer to filter the seeds. If you prefer, you can also remove the pulp. Personally, I like the pulp in this simple syrup recipe.
- Measure two cups of grapefruit juice and add it to a one-quart sauce pan. Add two cups of sugar to the juice and cook on medium-high heat for 15 minutes or until the sugar has full dissolved.
- Once the sugar has fully dissolved, remove from the heat source. Cool the simple syrup and store in a Mason Jar. Once cooled, you are ready to use the syrup in cocktails, spritzers and more!
