Copycat Recipes: H-E-B’s Agua del Día Recipe

July 12, 2020

This Agua del Día Recipe was inspired by H-E-B’s agua fresca of the same name. Keep scrolling for the full recipe!

If you are not familiar with H-E-B, it is a Texas grocery store chain with more than 340 store locations in Texas and northeast Mexico.  While H-E-B grocery stores vary by region, the stores located in the Rio Grande Valley are curated with an array of Mexican products.  Select Rio Grande Valley H-E-B’s are beloved by the community for offering freshly made authentic Mexican delicacies like aguas frescas, tamales, barbacoa, tortillas and more.

In addition to traditional aguas frescas like Agua de Tamarindo and Agua de Horchata, H-E-B offers their own specialty flavors like Agua del Día.  Recently, I had a craving for this non-alcoholic libation that is laden with a medley of fruits.  While I do not have H-E-B’s original recipe, I tried my best to create a copy cat recipe.

Before you scroll down to the recipe, please read the following important tips.  Agua del Día must be served chilled.  That said, I recommend using chilled ingredients to make the beverage.  In addition to using chilled ingredients, it is also important to use ripe fruit.  Using fruit at its optimum maturity will impart the best flavor and add a natural sweetness to the drink.

Now that we have covered these important tips, let’s make this Agua del Día Recipe!

Agua del Día Recipe

This fruit forward agua fresca is a beautiful medley of cantaloupe, strawberries and banana.
Print Recipe Pin Recipe
Servings 4 10 oz beverages

Ingredients

  • 1 cantaloupe
  • 14 oz chilled sweetened condensed milk
  • 12 oz chilled evaporated milk
  • 16 oz chilled water
  • 2 cups strawberries
  • 2 large bananas
  • 3 cups ice
  • ½ cup white granulated sugar optional

Instructions

  • Cut cantaloupe into bite size cubes and set aside.
  • Reserve 2-3 strawberries for garnish. Clean and hull the remaining strawberries. Halve the strawberries and set aside.
  • Add the following to a blender: bite size cantaloupe, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and water. Blend on a high speed for about 45 seconds to one minute.
  • Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the cantaloupe mixture. Discard the excess cantaloupe pulp that cannot be strained.
  • Add the strained cantaloupe mixture, strawberry halves and one large banana to the blender. Blend on a high speed for roughly 45 seconds to one minute.
  • Optional: Once the beverage is fully combined, use a spoon to sample the drink. The condensed milk should add a lovely sweetness. However, should you desire a sweeter beverage, like I do, add white granualted sugar in ¼ cup increments. Stir the sugar and sample the sweetness. If needed, add another ¼ cup of sugar. Do not add more than ½ cup of sugar to this beverage. Since strawberries impart both a tart and sweet flavor, I do add ½ cup of sugar to my Agua del Día.
  • I hope that you enjoy my copy cat recipe of H-E-B's Agua del Día. It is one of my favorite aguas frescas made by the grocery store. Serve the drink on ice and garnish with the remaining sliced strawberries and banana.

If you have visited an H-E-B that sells Agua del Día and you do try my recipe, I would love to know what you think!  Even though it has been a while since I last sampled this lovely drink, I have a keen memory of its flavor.  Before cantaloupe and strawberry season ends, I hope to make this recipe again.

If you are a fan of similar Mexican beverages, I have an array of other aguas frescas on my blog.  I most recently shared my recipe for Agua de Horchata.  Click here, for the full recipe.

I am a huge fan of lychee martini’s. @red_thest I am a huge fan of lychee martini’s. @red_thesteakhouse in Miami makes a great one. It pairs beautifully with their signature Four Cheese 🧀 Macaroni & Cheese. Our waiter suggested that we add lobster 🦞 and it’s was maginifique!

I can’t decide what I like more, Cocktails 🍸 I can’t decide what I like more, Cocktails 🍸 or Cake 🍰? After years of driving by Maximillians Grill & Wine Bar on Chapel Hill Rd. in Cary, I finally went with my friend @ejdevita for a Taurus Celebration Dinner. Everything was fantastic. If you are a Martini-lover, try the Max Martini with blue cheese stuffed olives 🫒. My fellow Taurus introduced me to Martinis on the Rocks and I don’t plan to have a Martini shaken or stirred anymore. Maximillians makes all of their gelatos and desserts in house. If the Coconut Cake is on the menu - order it! It’s been one month since I had a slice of this dessert and I am still dreaming about it. The Pei Mussels are another must. Focaccia accompanies the mussels to soak up the delicious seafood broth. Other notable mentions are the Voodoo Of The Day and the Double Cut Pork Chop. @maximilliansgrillandwine menu is farm to table so dishes may change. If it’s not too hot out, grab a table on their patio. I do recommend you make a reservation - to guarantee your spot. Maximillians is located on 8314 Chapel Hill Rd. Cary, NC 27513.

Pure Vegan Cafe is a juice and vegan food restaura Pure Vegan Cafe is a juice and vegan food restaurant focused on using high quality, healthy ingredients to create premium juices, smoothies, and 100% vegan food. I visited their
8369 Creedmoor Rd. location in Raleigh after work last week and sampled their delicious plant-based menu items. While I am not Vegan, I do follow a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Some of the food I sampled included the Banana Toast Crunch, PVC Tiki Burger, Chipotle Bowl and Novid Orange juice. I could not stop eating the PVC Tiki Burger. It is made of potatoes, peas, carrots and spices topped with lettuce, tomato, avocado, microgreens, chipotle mayo & honee mustard. In addition to the flavors, I like that I could see the veggies in this burger. It wasn’t a patty of mashed or compressed vegetables. I also enjoyed the Chipotle Bowl Salad made of romaine, black beans, avocado, quinoa, pico cashew dressing and cilantro dressing. Do not leave @purevegancafe with out trying an order of Sweet Potato Buffalo Ranch Fries! Make sure you bring a friend or two to sample these fries because you may end up eating the whole basket like I did 😂. Special thanks to Pure Vegan Cafe for hosting me and @bitesofbullcity for coordinating my visit.
