I first started eating kumquats when I was ten. I was fascinated by the “little oranges” and how I could eat both the flesh and the skin. The kumquat variety that I remember eating as a child had depths of sweetness which made them perfect for eating fresh. Recently, I came across kumquats at my local grocery store and could not resist buying them. As I popped one in my mouth, I noticed the kumquat was overwhelmingly sour. After a little research, I learned that there are four species of kumquats. These can vary in sweetness, tartness and size. Since I could not eat the extremely sour fruit as is, I would need to create a recipe that would add sweetness to the fruit. As a citrus and cocktail lover, a Kumquat Simple Syrup would be the perfect addition to my cocktail bar.
If you have been following me this past year, you are probably aware of my recent fascination with making homemade simple syrups and cocktails. This Kumquat Simple Syrup is a perfect mixer for Margaritas, mocktails, snow cones, frosé and agua frescas. My favorite part of this recipe is how the kumquats become “candied” and remain part of the simple syrup. This added detail makes any refreshment even more special.
This recipe yields four 16 oz Mason Jars of Kumquat Simple Syrup. If needed, you can halve the recipe below. However, I do recommend making a full batch. I love having extra simple syrups on hand to gift to family and friends that share the same passion for cocktails.
